What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable products made of a pure synthetic substance, usually replicating what occurs naturally in the body. Our body’s own skin gel or fibres holds water, giving hydration and youthful volume to our skin. As we age, the production and quality of our own fibres and skin gel diminishes, creating wrinkles, deep lines, sagging skin and the depletion of lips and cheeks. Injecting filler into these areas usually gives an immediate result and creates a newer, fuller and more youthful appearance.
There has been a trend away from permanent derma fillers recently, as there have been some extra concerns regarding these products. New “medium term” dermal fillers, similar to soft tissue protein, are now filling the gap in the wrinkle filler range. These newer products have produced some exciting developments in the rejuvenation of cheeks, jowls and around the eye region.
Where can dermal fillers be injected?
Most areas of the face (also parts of neck and hands) can be injected by dermal fillers, though different areas do require fillers of different density. Standard fillers are best injected into superficial tissue such as the lips, smoker’s lines, scars and fine wrinkles. Denser products are best injected into deeper tissue such as the nasolabial folds, marionette lines and cheeks.
What can I expect during treatment?
Once you and your practitioner have decided on which is the best filler to aesthetically augment the areas you wish to improve, you will be given a choice of two kinds of anaesthesia to minimise any discomfort during your treatment.
Wrinkle fillers are all injectable products and therefore some discomfort may be experience during the treatment. Your practitioner will firstly administer a dental block to completely numb the treatment area. If a dental block is not advised, or not suitable for the area to be treated, a topical anaesthetic cream and ice can be applied to help reduce any pain during treatment. We even have numbing gas available upon request. A standard treatment will usually only take 30 minutes and patients are able to drive and return to work immediately afterward. We advise a late appointment if it is the first time you are to have lip filler, as this is a sensitive area and is prone to some swelling. It is also important to remember that either a little or a lot can be injected, but it is entirely at the request of the patient as to how much product they would like to use. Your practitioner will advise and recommend shapes, styles and sizes but it is really up to you.
Wrinkle filler results are instantaneous and the results can be seen when you leave your appointment.
What can I expect after treatment?
Due to skin gel being a naturally water binding substance, swelling at the injections site will occur almost immediately from water in our body. This will usually take one to two days to subside, although some of your anticipated volume achieved is due to this. Some small spot bruising may occur at the injection site but should dissipate quickly. Swelling can be minimised directly after treatment with the application of wrapped ice to the area. Paracetamol can also be taken, as directed, for any pain once the dental block has reduced (rarely necessary).
It is recommended to have a “quiet night” after any treatment. Vigorous movement or rubbing of the area can cause more swelling. This might potentially move the product to other areas of the skin before the forty eight hour setting time. Alcohol consumption on the night of treatment can also accelerate swelling and aspirin or anti-inflammatory 5 days before your treatment should be avoided.
How long will my treatment last?
The depth of your lines, the amount of product used, your skin condition (your parents skin type) and lifestyle will determine the length of your treatment. Wrinkle fillers can last for up to twelve months (some longer) but generally most patients notice the start of your body’s natural absorption of the product at around the three to six month mark and will proceed with a top up around three to nine months post the original treatment. The product is designed to be “built over” and often the same amount of product does not necessarily need to be used at your top up appointment. However, most patients request the same amount of product from the original treatment as it so effective.
The longevity of your treatment can be prolonged by regular and healthy water consumption. Being a hydrophilic substance, you can “plump” up your treated area by drinking two glasses of water before any function or outing. Keeping your body properly hydrated at all other times will keep your product supple and looking its best. Also a healthy diet and lifestyle will help.
