What is a Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure designed to provide a more youthful appearance to the eyes. This is done by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can also improve vision in cases where excess skin of the upper eyelids has drooped to such an extent that it interferes with the peripheral vision.Liposculpture derives from liposuction in that it makes use of microcannulas to "sculpt" very selected areas of the body.

Are there scars?
As with any surgical procedure, there are scars. The incisions are typically placed within the normal creases and folds of the upper and lower eyelids. This will allow for incisions, or scars, to be barely visible within several months following the procedure. Patients requiring fat removal from the lower eyelids alone may be able to have incisions made on the inside of the eyelid, thus resulting in no visible scarring.Back To Top
How permanent are the results?
The results of blepharoplasty are typically long lasting, and rarely are further touch-up procedures required. The fat around the eyes, once removed, does not regrow.Back To Top
Why would a Blepharoplasty be performed?
Blepharoplasty is also performed for functional reasons. When an advanced amount of upper eyelid skin is present, the skin may protrude over the eyelashes and causes a loss of peripheral vision. The outer and upper parts of the visual field are most commonly affected and the condition may cause difficulty with activities such as driving or reading. What does the procedure involve?
- Procedure: Correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle. (Upper-eyelid surgery may be covered by insurance if used to correct visual field defects)
- Duration: 1 to 3 hours.
- Anaesthesia: Usually locally with sedation
- Side Effects: Temporary discomfort, tightness of lids, swelling, bruising. Temporary dryness, burning, itching of eyes. Excessive tearing, sensitivity to light for first few weeks.
- Risks: Temporary blurred or double vision. Infection, bleeding. Swelling at the corners of the eyelids. Dry eyes. Formation of whiteheads. Slight asymmetry in healing or scarring. Difficulty in closing eyes completely (rarely permanent). Pulling down of the lower lids (may require further surgery). Blindness (extremely rare).
- Recovery: Reading: two to three days. Back to work: seven to 10 days. Contact lenses: two weeks or more. Strenuous activities, alcohol: about three weeks. Bruising and swelling gone: several weeks.
- Duration of Results: Several years, often permanent.

To be a good candidate for eyelid surgery, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you. It's important to understand that the procedure can enhance your appearance and self confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with your surgeon. The best candidates for eyelid surgery should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations.
