Here’s the skinny on the Skinny BBL

Having a curvaceous butt has long been a beauty ideal, but in recent years, it has gained a particular amount of traction. The rise of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner has seen a shift in the popularity of fat transfer procedures – in particular the Brazilian Butt Lift.

The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) involves taking fat from another part of the body and inserting it into the buttocks to obtain a lifted shapelier behind. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries today, and not just for women. In fact in a 2021 survey”, the BBL procedure was ranked 3rd for both men and women in the “Most Popular Cosmetic Trends Worldwide”

Although BBL surgery is a great option for getting desired size and shape of the buttocks, everyone has a different body shape and not all cosmetic surgical procedures are suited for everyone. For those who think BBL is unattainable because of your genetics, or your physical regimen and already slim body shape the Skinny BBL may be for you.

What is a skinny BBL? And how is it different from a regular BBL?

Much like its established predecessor the Brazilian Butt Lift, the Skinny BBL involves harvesting areas of unwanted fat via liposuction and injecting the fat into the buttock. The intention of the Skinny BBL, is to enhance your natural shape, for a more subtle result, rather than completely modifying and exaggerating the size of the buttocks.

The key difference with the skinny BBL – gaining its name from the generalization of the type of patient undergoing this procedure – is its harvested volumes and injection technique, which ultimately opens its suitability to a wider range of candidates.

While the traditional BBL can involve harvesting as much as 5kg of fat from heavier patients (usually from areas such as the stomach or back) enough to dramatically change the size and shape of the buttock – the skinny BBL relies on a smaller harvest of fat usually collected from multiple areas around the body (such as arms, waist, and thighs) to contour and shape a naturally enhanced result of the behind while snatching areas of the body that hold those stubborn fatty pockets. This means those who do not meet the criteria of fat quantities for the traditional BBL can still get that highly sought-after fullness we associate with the ideal youthful-looking figure.

The natural results that can be achieved with a Skinny BBL, is what attracts a more diverse range of patients including mothers and grandmothers who are seeking a perkier, athletic shape.

Skinny BBL vs BBL – which is right for me?

Though both procedures offer a limit of treatability, for most patients undergoing a skinny BBL the main areas of impact are through the rounding of ‘hip dips’ and upper butt cheeks, to ultimately create a more hourglass figure. The traditional BBL offers a more dramatic volume and shape contour simply because there is more fat to work with.

For those with an already low to average BMI, generally under 23 on the BMI index, may be great candidates for the Skinny BBL. While those above generally are better suited for the traditional BBL procedure.

It comes down to what appearance you truly desire with as much natural-looking results suited to your body type.

What’s the downtime and the risks involved in a skinny BBL procedure?

Recovery generally takes 5-7 days, potentially longer depending on the number of areas treated with liposuction. The body will reabsorb some of the injected fat and you may require a top-up treatment. For this reason, Dr. Murray will usually inject slightly more fat than needed and you may be recommended to gain 1-2kgs of weight, in the lead up to your operation date. We use VASER Pro Lipo to remove the fat as it is a gentler technique than traditional liposuction, leading to an increase in cell survival rate. Some results will be seen immediately, but the true results can take six weeks to six months as the swelling decreases.

What happens before my skinny BBL?

A minimum of two consultations with Dr. Murray are needed before most procedures. A full history and examination will be conducted during your consultations. You will be started on antibiotics and extensive instructions will be given before the procedure.
