Absolute Lips vs Lip Flip

28 Aug 2019

Are you toying with the idea of having your lips done but don’t know what is the best option for you? Have you heard the term “Lip Flip” and don’t know how or what is being flipped? Read on, because we’re about to discuss the difference between the Lip Flip and Absolute Lips. Hyaluronic acid-based injections have become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments worldwide.  Not long ago they were almost unheard of, then came the ‘Kylie Jenner’ effect.  Kylie Jenner’s lips became a huge topic of conversation and the number of ‘post lip selfies’ increased hugely.

What are Hyaluronic acid-based injections?

Hyaluronic acid-based injections, are made of a non-animal, compound that occurs naturally in the body. As a part of the aging process, certain proteins in the body begin to decrease in production. With less of the connective protein that holds water molecules, our skin can lose volume and structure. Hyaluronic acid-based injections can be used to restore volume to the lips or to enhance the shape, size, projection, and symmetry of the lips.

The longevity of Hyaluronic acid-based injections can differ from patient to patient. As a guide, Hyaluronic acid-based injections last anywhere between 3 and 24 months depending on the filler used and the area injected.

We offer numbing cream and a local anaesthetic to all patients to make their Hyaluronic acid-based injections experience as comfortable as possible. Nerve blocks seem to be the most effective as local anaesthetic stops the sensation from the injections being transmitted to the pain sensors in the brain. We can also offer gas and sedation as we are Health Department licensed clinic.

The cost of Hyaluronic acid-based injections will depend on the product used and the amount of filler used.

What is a Lip Flip?

A Lip Flip is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that involves the injection of botulinum toxin into the muscle that surrounds the mouth (the orbicularis oris). When used alone, or in combination with Hyaluronic acid-based injections, the injected botulinum toxin prevents the orbicularis oris from holding the lips in place, resulting in the outward “flip” of the lip, creating the appearance of fuller and plumper lips.

A variant lip flip can also correct a “gummy smile”, where an overly excessive amount of gum tissue is visible above the top teeth when smiling.

It is important for patients to understand that a Lip Flip provides a more subtle result compared to the more dramatic effect achieved through Hyaluronic acid-based injections, as no volume is added to the lip. Whilst the longevity of the treatment varies from patient to patient, on average the results will last between six to eight weeks. Patients can maintain their look by undergoing regular maintenance treatments.

The cost of a Lip Flip at Absolute Cosmetic Medicine is from $149.
