What is Cellulite?
It is estimated that cellulite affects 85 per cent of women and 25 per cent of men. It can be in patients with no weight problems or those who are overweight. Indeed liposuction that is too aggressive can often make the problem worse. There are many theories regarding the cause of cellulite but it is not yet fully understood.
It is strange that such a common problem that can be distressing to some, if not all, is not well understood as yet. The theory is the effects of oestrogen hormones on fat causes excessive fibrous tissue and puckering in the skin. It has also been suggested that genetic influences cause reduced blood supply to the fat, and hence fibrous bands are formed which anchor the skin to the fat causing dimpling. Cellulite can exist in even thin patients.
|Procedure Name:||VASER Smooth|
|Great for:||Cellulite with or without VASER liposculpture.|
How Does VASER Smooth Work?
VASER Smooth is based on the VASER liposculpture hand piece. It was noted in early treatments that cellulite seemed to improve slightly. Further research showed that the ultrasound wave disrupted the fibrous bands of cellulite. A new handpiece and probe were developed that specifically targeted the fibrous bands.
The probe goes just underneath the skin elevating the skin and destroying the fibrous bands. Although not as effective as VASER liposculpture, the improvement in cellulite can be 50%-90%, possibly 75% on average for up to two years.
There are many treatments in the world that promise effective cellulite removal although only one other has shown any promise at all. In our clinic we have had magnificent results with VASER Smooth and found it to be a safe and effective treatment. The ultrasound is truly gentle and effective. We have the only VASER Smooth in Australia. Dr Murray has been extensively trained in the US by leading plastic surgeons in this treatment.
Before My Procedure
The work up for this procedure is very similar to VASER liposuction. The patient must be fit and well and avoid blood thinning medication such as aspirin, anti inflammatories and warfarin. Smoking and illicit drug use must be ceased at least two weeks before the procedure. An information pack and multiple consultations are given before the procedure so the patient is well prepared. Blood tests and medication must be organised before the procedure.
Day of Procedure
The patient must be on time for their appointment and the nurse will go through a thorough admission process. Photographs are taken and the patient is placed into a surgical gown.
The procedure is performed under sedation under full monitoring in our WA Health Department licensed clinic. Most patients will have VASER liposuction at the same time to remove fatty lumps and rolls in other areas or indeed in the area of cellulite.
Thin patients without excess fat do not necessarily need VASER liposuction/liposculpture at the same time, as VASER Smooth can be performed on its own. The patient is made sleepy and the area is numbed with the tumescent fluid. The patient is washed and a pressure garment must be worn for three to six weeks afterwards.
After My Procedure
The patient must be picked up and fully supervised by a responsible adult. Drowsiness will persist during the night although the area should remain numb for many hours and discomfort is minimal. The following day the patient needs to be up and walking around the house and exercise is to be avoided for four to seven days. The carer must drive the patient to the clinic where the nurses will do a full review and clean the areas. A bed bath will be given and the garment re-applied. The patient should avoid a shower for the first day. The doctor will also make a full assessment and review medications.
Usually patients will have two to four days off from work or up to seven days if they are performing more strenuous tasks. Light exercise is resumed at one week, moderate at two, full at three and extreme exercise should be avoided for four to eight weeks. The results can be seen at one month although three months is the average. It can take up to twelve months for full effect. The patient must be realistic as the results can vary between 50% and 90% with 70% to 75% average.
