How Does Platelet Plasma Work?
PRP is well known as being a natural therapy, using you own blood to derive growth and platelet factors to stimulate collagen growth in the skin. Simply put, these factors are like fertiliser for the skin, and it has been reported to rejuvenate the skin to some degree. We feel its main role is as an adjunct or helper for other treatments.
PRP was originally discovered in sports medicine for improving tendon injuries. It was noticed that the area around the skin would look enhanced as well. It was suggested that the growth factors stimulated stem cells which in turn differentiated in to new collagen and skin cells.
We believe three to four treatments are needed on average to see a significant improvement. These should be done once a month.
What End Results Can I Expect?
What is generally seen is an increase in skin thickness, tone, elasticity, and an improvement in general appearance. Fine lines and wrinkles may also improve.
What Areas Can be Treated With PRP?
PRP is ideal for the following areas:
- Eye area
- Skin on neck and chest
- Fine lines and wrinkles in all areas
- Backs of hands
- Lower arms
- Elbows and knees
Before My Procedure
The patient should be in good health and refrain from blood thinning medication such as aspirin anti-inflammatory medicine and warfarin. The area should be clean and dry. Numbing cream can be obtained from the pharmacy and placed as per directions on box on the area to be treated. This is usually half an hour before hand under glad wrap or cling wrap, which can be removed immediately before treatment.
Panadol can be taken one hour before but is usually not needed. The treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. On the day of treatment your doctor will take a blood sample in a special tube and spin this down to remove the growth factors for use. Multiple small injections will be used to place this back into the face, neck, chest or hands plus any other areas that need treating.
The larger the areas treated, the mores tubes needed and the more cost for the procedure. You must be aware some of the discount clinics may use one tube to treat multiple areas, which is not recommended.
Once the area has been treated under aseptic conditions, ice can be applied for half an hour on and off for as long as needed.
Bruising ranges from nothing up to moderate bruising and very rarely severe bruising. Downtime from work is from one to seven days. Makeup can be applied after 24hrs if to a clean prepared skin.
You should sleep with an extra pillow on the first night after the procedure to avoid swelling. If the area becomes red hot and swollen and you become feverish do not hesitate to contact the clinic. This is very rare and we have not observed this. The procedure can then be repeated in one months’ time.
Patients should see gradual improvement. Results are variable and you must be realistic regarding results as this is a minor procedure. Often patients report some time later that they feel the ageing of their skin has slowed down.
