What Are Collagen Stimulators?
Collagen Stimulators are essentially wrinkle fillers that use your own body’s natural production of collagen to fill wrinkles, lines, hollowed cheeks and temples. Designed predominantly to fill areas that decrease in volume as we age around the face, they are not recommended for use in the lips, as the colour of the product can show through fine red skin. A standard wrinkle filler should be used to augment the lips.
Two collagen stimulators are available that work in very similar ways with only a few differences in their makeup. Your practitioner will discuss with you the pros and cons of both products and decide which one will most suit the area you would like to re-sculpt on your face.
How Do Collagen Stimulators Work?
The original Collagen Stimulator uses micro particles suspended in a carrier gel that can be injected into hollowed areas of the face.
It is recommended to increase the volume in the cheeks, temples and fill deep lines including nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
These products can also be used for the hands and neck. Most patients may experience post redness from the products carrier gel and swelling from the injections sites.
Over the next four to six weeks, the product will start to stimulate collagen factories in your skin to start filling itself. Usually you will require a second top up treatment after the initial stimulation has occurred and settled down.
Each patient will respond differently depending on his or her collagen production and it is recommended to build on the first treatment rather than start with a larger amount. In some instances, depending on the patient’s age, the depth of the treatment area and muscle movement in the area, there may be a need for further treatments.
Once the desired volume has been achieved, results may last for up to 24 months. Future treatments are required once your body naturally processes your collagen stores.
The latest Collagen Stimulator uses microsphere particles of calcium suspended in a gel base. This product is designed to use the carrier gel to give instant visible results to the patient.
Over the following three months, the gel is naturally absorbed by the body and collagen produced by the calcium stimulating qualities, is laid down around the areas where the carrier gel originally filled. Over time, the body naturally processes the stimulating microspheres of calcium and collagen stores and further treatments will be required to fill the area again. Treatments will usually last for approximately 24 months.
What Can I Expect During Treatment?
Being an injectable product of some thickness, collagen stimulators may cause initial discomfort at the time of injection. The use of local anaesthetic and topical anaesthetic cream can help minimise pain at the injection sites. Ice can also be used to reduce any localised swelling in the hours and days after treatment.
It is always wise to purchase numbing cream from the pharmacy. Put a thin layer on the site to be treated and cover it with cling wrap for at least half an hour.
What Can I Expect After the Collagen Stimulators?
Most patients may experience post treatment swelling and some bruising from the needle sites. The carrier gel used is often thicker than wrinkle fillers and may cause more swelling for patients who are used to standard wrinkle filler treatments.
The stimulation of collagen may produce mild itching in the treated areas but will ease with time. The products will not be able to be noticed under the skin surface however, depending on the area injected, tiny bumps may appear under the skin if it is pulled taught. Correct massaging of the area at the time of treatment can prevent this from occurring.
Generally the products are quite pliable and will mimic the movement of the surrounding tissue and will not be noticed by the patient or public.
One of the thicker products will give a filler face lift look especially when injected into the cheeks and has remarkable rejuvenating properties.
