Why Choose a Thread Face Lift?

As we begin to age our tissue becomes weakened, we lose facial fat and the underlying support structure becomes lax and ptotic (sagging). The main areas to suffer this sagging are our cheeks, around the eyes, the brows, the jowls and the neck, creating a longer and older looking face. Younger patients suffer from cheek and brow ptosis as well, often prompting them to seek procedures which are effective but less invasive than major surgery.

How do the Threads Work?

The threads have cogs or barbs, which lie in one direction and ‘open up’ when implanted into the subcutaneous tissue and ‘tugged’ into place. The tissue is caught slightly in these cogs and is then suspended and lifted. The threads are placed in carefully predetermined areas in the face to support and lift the tissue.

Initial results of a thread face lift can be dramatic and may even improve over six months as your collagen encapsulates and ‘bunches’ around the threads, causing even further lifting.

This procedure is considered much less invasive than traditional mid-face or face and brow lifts, requiring much less operating and recovery time. The thread face lift is also becoming popular with younger people wishing for subtle changes to delay the signs of aging, such as facial drooping.

Often the best results are achieved in combination with wrinkle fillers, fat transfer or laser resurfacing. For more stubborn areas on the face and neck, new stronger threads are now available.

What Areas Can be Treated with a Thread Face Lift?

The areas which may be treated thus far with a thread face lift are the outer brow (1), the cheeks (2), the jaw line (3) and the neck (4). Diagram (5) is an alternate suture suspension technique for the cheeks. Many patients will not need all of these areas corrected. Common areas for younger patients are the cheeks and brows since they are the first in line to begin their descent. As you age, the lower half of the face begins to sag as well.

Am I a Candidate for a Thread Face Lift?

If you are in good physical, emotional and mental health, have realistic expectations, no serious health problems, have normal skin thickness and have the desire to rid yourself of loose, sagging tissue of the face and neck, you may be a good candidate for a thread lift.

Those with considerable laxity may opt for a face, brow and neck lift instead or a combination with laser resurfacing and fat transfer. Only a qualified professional will be able to determine your individual needs. Also, if you are considering losing weight, you may want to wait until after your target weight is achieved. You may need additional lifting or skin removal surgery to alleviate excess skin after you have lost the desired weight, which would mean that the money spent on the procedure may be partially wasted.

Most thread lift procedures are performed under regional or local anaesthesia with the addition of an oral sedative. However, increasingly, doctors are using twilight sedation with local anaesthesia. The threads required per area would be two for each brow, three for each cheek, 2 for each jaw line and two for each side of the neck.

What to Expect in Your Recovery Time?

Patients will find their facial movement should be limited for the first two weeks. It may also be uncomfortable to laugh. No massaging or significant facial pressure should be applied in the first month after the procedure. The maximum tensile strength usually occurs at 21 days.

Although threads are not as invasive as other lifting procedures, this procedure will cause localised swelling and bruising. The area will be tender, puffy and possibly discoloured from the minor intra operative bruising.

To minimise swelling and not disrupt the placement of the threads, it is important not to make exaggerated facial expressions, massage or rub the face in any way, not to sleep on the face or disturb the face if at all possible. You can resume normal activities (light walking, sitting up, watching television, computer work) within the hour and are told to ‘take it easy’ during the first few days. This means no heavy exercise, no excessive talking or exaggerated facial movements, no facial massage, no shaving of your face, scrubbing, rubbing, chemical peels, harsh cleansers or sleeping upon your face for five days.

What Should I Expect in the Months Ahead?

There are often immediate results; however, the results do continue to improve over a three to six month period. This improvement is due to the collagen synthesis as it lifts and bunches around the threads.
