What is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Erbium laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses the precision of erbium lasers to remove the outer layers of the skin, thereby promoting the growth of new, healthier skin. This technique is particularly effective for addressing fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and other skin irregularities, especially on the face, neck, and hands. The Erbium Laser is favoured for its ability to target the skin with minimal heat, reducing the risk of burns and allowing for a more controlled treatment. Erbium Laser skin resurfacing is an option for those seeking to rejuvenate their skin with minimal downtime.

Recovery Time

The healing process following erbium laser skin resurfacing usually takes between 7 to 10 days, after which the skin typically recovers sufficiently. Makeup can be safely applied after about 14 days. However, it’s important to note that the recovery time can vary among patients, influenced by factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle habits. These individual differences can affect how quickly and efficiently the skin heals post-procedure. Patients are advised to closely follow their personalized post-treatment care instructions to ensure the best possible healing and results.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON ERBIUM LASER SKIN RESURFACING

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.

It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.

To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.

On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.

Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Benefits

The Erbium Laser is adept at smoothing out both fine lines and deeper wrinkles on the face, including the sensitive areas around the lips and eyes, without leaving the noticeable demarcation line that hotter lasers might cause.

This laser also targets irregular pigmentation, sunspots, and freckles by vaporising the damaged surface layers of the skin. Additionally, the stimulation of collagen production in the treated areas can lead to a subtle lifting effect, as the new collagen fibers offer added support to the skin.

Apart from facial treatment, the Erbium Laser can be used on delicate areas like the neck and the backs of the hands, helping to reduce signs of skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure. While the skin tightening effect might be less pronounced in these areas compared to the face, the improvement in photo-aging is significant, blending with the skin’s new colour and tone achieved from full-face Erbium Laser treatments.

Furthermore, Erbium Laser resurfacing can also enhance and reduce the appearance of acne scarring. The treatment works on the same principle of removing layers of skin to diminish both deep and fine lines. However, due to the often deeper nature of acne scars compared to wrinkles, complete eradication of scars may not be guaranteed, as safety considerations limit the number of skin layers that can be removed in one session.

Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure

The Erbium Laser, an infra-red laser, works by vaporising the outermost layers of aged or sun-damaged skin. This laser precisely focuses on the water molecules within the skin cells. As these water molecules absorb the laser’s light energy, the cells rupture, leading to the removal of the skin’s layers in a controlled manner. This process is repeated layer by layer, allowing for precise and targeted removal of the skin’s damaged outer layers.

Why choose Absolute Cosmetic for your Perth treatment?

We take pride in being among the pioneers in Western Australia to perform Erbium laser treatments, with hundreds of successful procedures under our belt. Our team of nurses is not only highly skilled but also genuinely caring, dedicated to providing exceptional follow-up care.

What can you expect during the Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment?

Sedation/Anesthetic

We recommend undergoing the Erbium laser procedure under neurolept sedation for optimal comfort. This treatment is carried out in our fully accredited day surgery facility. Typically, the procedure lasts about an hour, followed by a recovery period of approximately 2 hours. After this, you will be ready for discharge into the care of a responsible adult. Your nominated caregiver will need to take you home, stay with you for the night, and then accompany you back to our Nedlands clinic the next day for your day 1 post-procedure review. This process ensures your safety and comfort while providing the necessary support for a smooth recovery.

The Procedure

After the completion of the procedure, a moisturising gel bandage is applied to the treated area to alleviate any stinging sensation. This is further secured with white padded dressings and a crepe bandage to ensure protection and comfort. While the procedure typically results in minimal discomfort, pain relief medication will be prescribed to assist with your recovery. In the days following the treatment, you may experience some itching or a sensation of tightness in the skin, which are common signs of the skin’s natural healing process beginning.

The Risks

Erbium laser skin resurfacing addresses a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, scars, and hyperpigmentation. While it can deliver impressive results, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks associated with this treatment.

Such risks can include but not limited to pigment changes, infection, scarring and/or skin sensitivity.

Before undergoing erbium laser skin resurfacing, it’s crucial to discuss the potential risks and benefits with any of our team members. They can help determine if the procedure is suitable for your skin type and address any concerns you may have.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing Aftercare

Maintaining cleanliness and protection of the treated area is essential for optimal healing, and this requires diligent daily care, to be performed four times a day. As instructed by your nurses, this regimen includes a vinegar wash followed by the application of Dermeze ointment to the lasered areas. Adhering to this aftercare routine is crucial to prevent the skin from drying out and to avoid scab formation.

In addition to the prescribed aftercare routine, if you have pets, it’s important to ensure that they are kept away from the treated area. This precaution is necessary to prevent any potential infection to the exposed skin.

Typically, the skin will gradually heal over a period of 7 to 10 days following the treatment. This process is an integral part of ensuring a smooth and effective recovery.

Approximately two weeks after the procedure, once the treated area has completely healed, you may begin applying makeup to conceal any residual redness.

It is critically important to protect the treated skin from direct sunlight in the initial weeks following the procedure. Always wear hats and apply sunscreen, even for brief outdoor excursions. Sun exposure can be detrimental to the healing process, so taking these precautions is essential to ensure the best possible recovery and maintain the integrity of the treatment results.

It’s important to note that recovery from the Erbium laser procedure can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle choices can all influence the healing process. While some individuals may heal rapidly, others might take a longer time to fully recover. This personalised aspect of healing should be considered when following post-procedure care instructions and when managing expectations about the recovery timeline.
