What is IPL Skin Rejuvenation?

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a non-invasive medical technology that uses light therapy to reduce signs of ‘photo-ageing’, including pigmentation, freckles, sun spots and spider veins on the face and legs. IPL Skin Rejuvenation can create a clearer, radiant and healthy complexion by firming the skin and reducing pore size.

Spider vein treatment

When treating spider veins, the light is attracted to the haemoglobin within the vein and converts it to heat energy, destroying the lining of the vein wall. Any successfully treated veins will fade and slowly disappear as they are absorbed naturally by the body, similar to the dispersion of a bruise. Blood flow will then be directed into veins deeper within the dermis so they’re no longer visible.

The treatment will feel like a pinch or a snap of a warm elastic band. Numbing cream or pain medication is an option if you have a low pain threshold.

Expected results of IPL Skin Rejuvenation

The number of treatments required for IPL skin rejuvenation in the treatment of sun spots, freckles, pigmentation or rosacea can be different for each patient. Lightening of pigmentation will usually occur after your first treatment but if you are seeking a significant reduction in the colour of your pigmentation, you may require up to 4 or 6 treatments.

Usually, 4 to 6 treatments are needed to break down large clusters of veins, depending on their severity and density. However, small amounts of superficial veins may only require 1 to 4 treatments.

Aftercare

Exposure is limited to an extremely short pulse and most patients report minimal pain. You may experience some short-lived side effects. These may include slight reddening of the skin or local swelling which goes away within a few days. In rare instances, there may be transitory blistering or burning. To reduce these side effects you can apply ice to the treated area afterwards, however, most patients do not find this necessary.

It is important to limit your exposure to the sun after your treatment.
