What is a Neck Lift?

The neck area is one of the areas that is often forgotten when thinking about ageing prevention, until it is too late. Many patients express that they wish they had paid more attention to their neck in their younger years. The Neck Lift is often added to a Mini Face Lift or Ultra Mini Face Lift which offers lower face rejuvenation. This may also include submental plication, also known as the submental plasty, which tightens the neck muscles.

Are you a suitable candidate for a Neck Lift?

If you are conscious of the signs of ageing that have appeared on your neck, such as loose skin, sagging or ‘turkey neck’, and are in good health you may be a good candidate for a Neck Lift procedure.

When combining a Neck Lift with a Mini Face Lift, small incisions are made at the ears, the SMAS muscle is tightened and Dr. Murray will remove the excess skin. To address the platysma muscle, a small incision is made under the chin and sutures are used to correct muscle separation and tighten.

There are some complementary procedures that can enhance the results of the Neck Lift including; J Plasma Renuvion Skin Tightening and Vaser Pro Liposculpture. J Plasma Renuvion Skin Tightening utilises plasma energy to create a contraction effect of the skin. Vaser Pro Liposculpture can remove excess fat from the submental area.

Also, if you’re considering losing weight, you may want to wait until after your target weight is achieved, because you may need additional lifting or skin removal surgery to alleviate consequent excess skin. Otherwise, you may be wasting money on this procedure if you proceed beforehand.

Alternative options to the Surgical Neck Lift

There are non-surgical options for neck rejuvenation. Although these procedures can give results, it must be noted that surgical procedures usually offer a more dramatic and longer lasting result.

Wrinkle Relaxer: can be used to relax the platysma bands and reduce the appearance of ‘turkey neck’. The results of this treatment can last between 3-4 months.

Skin Boosters: are a type of micro dermal filler which can be used to improve the quality of the skin. Skin Boosters work by hydrating the skin from the inside out. Patients notice some immediate results which improve over time.

Skin Tightening: Ultraformer or Thermage Skin Tightening can be used to tighten the skin in the neck and jowls. The results of these treatments are unlikely to be as dramatic or long lasting as a a neck lift surgery, however, this is a non-invasive option.

What does a Neck Lift in Perth cost?

The cost of a Neck Lift in Perth will depend on which procedures are being done as it is often part of a larger procedure. An Ultra Mini Face Lift costs from $6,600, and a Mini Lift costs from $9,900. If Sub-mental Plication is added to these procedures it is $4,400. Many patients choose to add Vaser Pro Liposuction and J Plasma Renuvion Skin Tightening to this procedure to address fat pads that have sagged due to age. Vaser Pro Liposuction starts from $3,300 per area and J Plasma Renuvion Skin Tightening starts from $3,300 per area. When many procedures are packaged together discounts may apply. For an accurate quote it is important to see Dr Glenn Murray for a consultation so he can assess your concerns and recommend the best mix of procedures to deliver the desired results.

What happens before the Neck Lift procedure?

Smoking and illicit drug use must be strictly avoided before the procedure. We take smoking very seriously as a high risk for any procedure, so you must be aware of the cancellation policy if you smoke. Smoking increases the risk of some serious complications during and after surgery. Ideally, you should stop smoking at least 8-weeks prior to a procedure, cutting down does not reduce the risk of complications, however, the greatest health benefit is gained by quitting smoking for good. More information about the possible complications, as well as information about how to quit, is available here.

You should be fit and healthy, and avoid blood thinning medication such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory medicine. You must fast on the day of the procedure. You are able to eat dinner as usual the night before, then you must stop drinking fluids at midnight. On the morning of the procedure you can take a small sip of water to take your pre-surgery medication.

At least 2 consultations are needed before most procedures. A full history and examination will be conducted. You will be started on antibiotics and extensive instructions will be given.

What happens after the Neck Lift procedure?

Patients will find their lower face and neck movement limited for the first 2-weeks. It may be uncomfortable to laugh, sing or grimace. Avoid massage or facial pressure to the area for 1-month. It is recommended to wait at least 7-10 days before returning to work. If you have added Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing to the procedure, it is recommended to take at least 2 weeks off.

Swelling and bruising may be present for up to 1-month after the procedure.

There are often immediate results, however, these continue to improve over a 3-6 month period. This improvement is due to the collagen synthesis and lifting and bunching effect.
