What is Picosure Laser Tattoo Removal?

The Picosure laser is the gold standard in tattoo and pigmentation removal technology. Absolute Cosmetic had the first PicoSure machine in Western Australia. It has extremely positive feedback from patients.

There are many types of laser machines that can remove tattoos, the main advantage of using Picosure is the extremely short-pulse time. This allows very high energy to be delivered rapidly to the tattoo pigment. It destroys the pigment more effectively and, in most cases, leaves the skin intact. This means fewer treatments, fewer complications and better results.

  • Size of the tattoo,
  • Location of the tattoo,
  • How old the tattoo is,
  • Tattoo colour,
  • Scarring in the area,

My Tattoo was Treated With A Laser In The Past and Didn’t Clear, Should I Try Again?

Until the launch of Picosure, Q-Switch lasers had been considered the gold standard for removing tattoos. Q-Switched ND Yag Lasers use thermal energy to heat up and break apart the ink particles. PicoSure uses ultra-short pulses to hit the ink particle with pressure so strong that the ink shatters into smaller particles. Because the particles are so small they are more readily absorbed and eliminated by the body. PicoSure has been proven to be successful in treating dark, stubborn blue and green inks as well as tattoos that were not cleared successfully in the past.

What happens after the procedure?

A common side effect of a laser session is a slight whitening or ‘frosting’ of the skin which may feel dry and itchy. Some other effect includes mild swelling and redness some may experience slight blistering and pinpoint bleeding for a few days after the treatment.

There is a very slight risk of scarring however this risk is lower with PicoSure than many other machines.

Every tattoo is unique and contains different colours and different volumes of ink. It’s important to speak with one of our doctors to find out how many treatments you may need, and what to expect.

With Picosure, the number of treatments is generally expected to be roughly half of that required for alternative laser removal.
