Surgical Lip Flip

The Lip Lift, also known as the Surgical Lip Flip, has gained considerable popularity in recent times. While it was once sought after by older patients looking to restore their lips’ appearance to their faces, it has seen a resurgence in popularity due to the contemporary trend of fuller lips, often popularized by celebrities like Kylie Jenner.

The Lip Lift involves shortening the skin between the upper lip and the nose, resulting in the elevation of the vermilion border (the edges of the lips). It may also define the cupid’s bow. As a result, this procedure can make the lips appear more enhanced, less heavy, and give the impression of added volume.

Results

After the lip lift surgery, patients can anticipate some swelling and redness in the surgical areas. Typically, suture removal for the lip lift procedure takes place seven days following the surgery. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to understand that results can differ significantly from one individual to another and may be influenced by various contributing factors.

Recovery Time

The removal of sutures typically takes place seven days after the lip lift procedure. Swelling and bruising can persist for several weeks following surgery; however, the duration can vary among patients. Factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle may play a role in the healing process and influence the extent and duration of these effects.

Risks

Risks that patients should consider when opting for surgery is the potential of infection, bleeding, scarring, swelling, asymmetry and/or irregularities in lip contouring to name a few. Communication with a qualified surgeon, thorough pre-operative assessments, and realistic expectations are crucial in mitigating these risks and achieving satisfactory results with lip lift surgery.

important information for a lip lift

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.

It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.

To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.

On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.

Candidate for a Surgical Lip Lift

The Surgical Lip Flip procedure can enhance the shape and appearance of the upper lip. There is an ideal measurement for the philtrum (the skin between the nose and lip): ranging from 11 to 13mm for women and 13 to 15mm for men. Over the decades, the philtrum can increase in size by up to 3mm due to the natural loss of collagen and lengthening of soft tissue.

Generally, there are two types of patients interested in the Surgical Lip Flip. Older patients may be frustrated with the elongation of the philtrum and often opt for this procedure in conjunction with other surgeries like a Mini Face Lift or Eye Lid Surgery. On the other hand, younger patients seeking the Lip Lift are typically looking for a more dramatic or permanent result than what lip fillers can provide. However, your suitability for the procedure will be determined during a consultation with Dr. Murray.

However, your suitability will be determined following a consultation with Dr Murray.

Wrinkle Relaxer, Dermal Filler or the Surgical Lip Lift?

There are multiple treatment methods to enhance the lips including Dermal Filler, Anti Wrinkle Injections and the Surgical Lip Lift.

Dermal Filler: this is the most popular form of lip augmentation. Lip Filler adds volume to the lips; this can restore lost volume, increase the size of the lip, enhance symmetry and more. Dermal Fillers can enhance the upper and lower lip.

Anti Wrinkle Injections: a small dose of Wrinkle Relaxer can relax the muscle just above the mouth (orbicularis oris muscle). The relaxing of this muscle allows the top lip to be gently rolled out, giving the illusion of slight added volume. It is worth noting that this procedure will only augment the top lip, not the lower lip. This can also prevent and reduce movement lines.

Surgical Lip Lift Procedure: the most invasive but longest-lasting option. This procedure surgically shortens the skin between the upper lip and nose to give the illusion of a fuller top lip. It is worth noting that this procedure will only augment the top lip, not the lower lip.
