What are Wrinkle Relaxers?

What happens on the day of the procedure?

It starts with a full consultation that covers all the risks and benefits of the treatment. Ice will be applied to the area after it has been cleaned, and a very fine needle is inserted with the product. Treatment takes approximately 15 minutes and recovery is almost immediate.

The product works by blocking the nerve that feeds the muscle. This is not a permanent block and can last 3-4 months. If a complication such eyebrow droopiness occurs, usually this will resolve quickly within 2-4 weeks.

The nerve that is blocked can no longer transmit impulses to the muscle, so the muscle doesn’t contract. This does not rid you of facial expression, but it reduces overexpression, which can lead to deep creases and furrows in the face. Reducing this movement prevents aging and treats existing lines.

The effect usually improves the more the product is used, but sometimes dermal filling is also required.

What happens after the procedure?

You will be given instructions for post-procedure care as well as an aftercare handout, that must be followed carefully. Don’t lay flat for 4 hours following the procedure.

The wrinkle relaxing effect slowly shows after 5-10 days. One to two percent of people need a top-up after 14 days. Some patients do need a higher dose, especially men.

There is no recovery time for this treatment, however, you may experience bruising for a few days afterwards, as all needles can cause bruising.

Note: If you don’t like the treatment, you’re not locked into future treatments as the effect will wear off. However, 3 months of non-wrinkling will be beneficial for life.

One advantage of wrinkle relaxers is the wrinkle prevention aspect. The longer wrinkle relaxers are used, usually, the more wrinkle prevention occurs. The added advantage is that most complications are completely reversible.

Wrinkle Treatments: Be Warned

There are three main wrinkle relaxers approved for use in Australia. Don’t be fooled by misleading advertising about cheaper prices. Different products have different units and may sound cheaper, but you’re getting no discount at all. Some clinics also use products that have needs down.

Always ensure to have your procedure performed at a licensed clinic, with experienced injectors using full- strength TGA approved products.

All patients must be seen by a doctor before their wrinkle treatment. This is a legal requirement. If you have received treatment without seeing a doctor at another centre, please report this to the regulatory body by calling 1800 020 653, or visit tga.gov.au.

It’s also illegal to import wrinkle relaxer and dermal filler into Australia.
