Address Ageing With Wrinkle Relaxers

Wrinkle relaxers, or anti-wrinkle injections, are among the most popular non-surgical cosmetic medical treatments worldwide.

As we age, we notice the formation and deepening of fine lines and wrinkles. A wrinkle relaxer is a purified protein that causes temporary paralysis of the muscle injected into it, reducing dynamic expression lines.

The effect can last between 3 and 4 months and is not permanent. With regular treatments, you can extend the duration of your anti-wrinkle injections.

How Wrinkle Relaxers Work

Anti-wrinkle injections (wrinkle relaxers) work by temporarily blocking the transmitting messages between nerve and muscle cells. This means that the movement of the muscle is restricted or paralysed (depending on the muscle and the wants of the client). This gives the overlying skin the chance to rest and reduce the appearance of expression lines.

If you have static lines (lines still present when the muscle is not moving), you may find that they reduce appearance over time with multiple treatments. Alternatively, you may need to combine your treatment with dermal fillers for very deep lines.

We recommend combining anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler with skin treatments such as laser rejuvenation for complete rejuvenation. Absolute Cosmetic Medicine is one of Perth’s leading Anti-Wrinkle Injection clinics.

At What Age Should I Consider Having Anti-Wrinkle Injections?

This is individual to you, your skin and your concerns. Some patients use Anti-Wrinkle Injections to prevent and delay static lines from forming. As we age, we firm lines and creases when making facial expressions.

With repeated use of facial muscles and loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, these expression lines become static lines. By reducing expression lines, it takes longer for static lines to form.

Wrinkle relaxers are intended for individuals who are 18+ years old. Anyone younger than this will require a parent present.

Others start anti-wrinkle injections once the static lines have formed and seek facial rejuvenation. Anti-wrinkle injections are available at all our clinics across Perth.

What to Expect On The Day of Your Anti-Wrinkle Injections

It starts with a full consultation covering all the treatment’s risks and benefits. Ice will be applied to the area after the skin has been cleaned, and a fine needle will be inserted with the product. Treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, and recovery is almost immediate.

The product works by blocking the nerve that feeds the facial muscle. This is not a permanent block and can last 3-4 months. If a complication, such as eyebrow droopiness, occurs, usually this will resolve quickly within 2-4 weeks.

The blocked nerve can no longer transmit impulses to the muscle, so the power doesn’t contract. This does not render you unable to make facial expressions but reduces muscle movement in treated areas, which can lead to deep creases and furrows in the skin. Reducing this movement prevents aging and treats existing lines.

The effect usually improves when the product is used, but dermal filler is sometimes required.

After Your Anti-Wrinkle Injections

You will be given instructions for post-procedure care and an aftercare handout that must be followed carefully. Don’t lay flat for 4 hours following the procedure.

The wrinkle-relaxing effect slowly shows after 5-10 days. One to two per cent of people need a top-up treatment after 14 days. Some patients do need a higher dose, especially men.

There is no recovery time for this treatment. However, you may experience bruising or swelling for a few days afterwards. This is a side effect of a needle breaking the skin. All needles can cause bruising. We are one of the most trusted anti-wrinkle injection Perth clinics.

Note: If you don’t like the treatment, you’re not locked into future treatments, as the effect will wear off. However, 3-months of reducing expression lines can be beneficial for life.

One advantage of wrinkle relaxers is the wrinkle prevention aspect. The longer wrinkle relaxers are used. Usually, more wrinkle prevention occurs. The added advantage is that most complications are entirely reversible.

Ensure Your Injections Are Performed At a Licensed Clinic

There are three main wrinkle relaxers approved for use in Australia. Units are calculated differently across all products, leading to some deals looking cheaper, but you’re getting no discount. Some clinics also use products that have been watered down.

Always ensure your procedure is performed at a licensed clinic with experienced injectors using full-strength approved products.

A doctor must see all patients before their wrinkle treatment. This is a legal requirement. If you have received treatment without seeing a doctor at another centre, please report this to the regulatory body by calling 1800020653 or visiting the AHPRA website.

It is also illegal to import wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers into Australia. Wrinkle relaxer products are prescription-only medications and should not be treated as beauty products.
