It starts with a full consultation covering all the treatment’s risks and benefits. Ice will be applied to the area after the skin has been cleaned, and a fine needle will be inserted with the product. Treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, and recovery of the injected areas can take a few hours to calm down.
The product works by blocking the nerve that feeds the facial muscle. This is not a permanent block and can last 3-4 months. If a complication, such as eyebrow droopiness, occurs, this can often resolve within 2-4 weeks, however it can be longer depending on the patient. If these complications occur, please call our after-hours number so that we can assist as promptly as possible.
The blocked nerve can no longer transmit impulses to the muscle, so the muscle doesn’t contract. This does not render you unable to make facial expressions but reduces muscle movement in treated areas, which can lead to deep creases and furrows in the skin. Reducing this movement is designed to help delay the deepening of existing lines.
The effect usually improves when the product is used, but dermal filler is sometimes required.
