Address Ageing With Wrinkle Relaxers

Wrinkle relaxers, or anti-wrinkle injections, are widely used non-surgical cosmetic medical treatments.

As we age, we notice the formation and deepening of fine lines and wrinkles. A wrinkle relaxer is a purified protein that causes temporary paralysis of the muscle injected into it, reducing dynamic expression lines.

The effect can last between 3 and 4 months and is not permanent. With regular treatments, you can extend the duration of your anti-wrinkle injections.

At Absolute Cosmetic, we have multiple anti-wrinkle treatments available. For further information, please call us for a complimentary express nurse consultation to discuss your options in more detail.

How Wrinkle Relaxers Work

Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Wrinkle Relaxers) work by temporarily blocking the transmitting messages between nerve and muscle cells. This means that the movement of the muscle is restricted or paralysed (depending on the muscle and the wants of the client). This is designed to help the overlying skin rest, potentially reducing the appearance of expression lines.

If you have static lines (lines still present when the muscle is not moving), you may find that they reduce in appearance over time with multiple treatments. Alternatively, you may need to combine your treatment with dermal fillers for very deep lines.

We recommend combining anti-wrinkle injections and dermal filler with skin treatments such as laser therapy for complete rejuvenation. Absolute Cosmetic is one of Perth’s full-time Anti-Wrinkle Injection clinics.

What Age Should I Consider A Perth Wrinkle Relaxer Treatment?

This is individual to you, your skin and your concerns. Some patients use Anti-Wrinkle Injections to prevent and delay static lines from forming. As we age, we form lines and creases when making facial expressions.

With repeated use of facial muscles and loss of collagen and elastin in the skin, these expression lines become static lines. By reducing expression lines, it takes longer for static lines to form.

Wrinkle relaxers are only intended for individuals who are 18+ years old.

Others start anti-wrinkle injections once the static lines have formed and seek facial rejuvenation. We have multiple Anti-Wrinkle Injection clinics across Perth for your convenience.

Ensure Your Injectables Are Performed At a Licensed Clinic

Always ensure your procedure is performed at a licensed clinic with experienced injectors using full-strength approved products.

A doctor must see all patients before their wrinkle treatment. This is a legal requirement. If you have received treatment without seeing a doctor at another clinic, please report this to the regulatory body by calling 1800 020 653 or visiting the AHPRA website.

It is also illegal to import wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers into Australia.

Questions to ask when choosing a cosmetic injectable clinic

  • If your treatment is being carried out by a registered nurse, is the consenting doctor in the same state? This can be important if there are complications.
  • What product is being injected and is it approved for use in Australia? It is important to know what is being injected into your face.
  • How experienced is the injector? Everyone starts somewhere but if the injector is not highly experienced, have they had sufficient training and ongoing support from an experienced injector?
  • What should you do if you have a complication outside of the clinic’s opening hours? Do they have an on-call emergency Doctor?

What to Expect On the Day of Your Anti-Wrinkle Injections

The Treatment

It starts with a full consultation covering all the treatment’s risks and benefits. Ice will be applied to the area after the skin has been cleaned, and a fine needle will be inserted with the product. Treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, and recovery of the injected areas can take a few hours to calm down.

The product works by blocking the nerve that feeds the facial muscle. This is not a permanent block and can last 3-4 months. If a complication, such as eyebrow droopiness, occurs, this can often resolve within 2-4 weeks, however it can be longer depending on the patient. If these complications occur, please call our after-hours number so that we can assist as promptly as possible.

The blocked nerve can no longer transmit impulses to the muscle, so the muscle doesn’t contract. This does not render you unable to make facial expressions but reduces muscle movement in treated areas, which can lead to deep creases and furrows in the skin. Reducing this movement is designed to help delay the deepening of existing lines.

The effect usually improves when the product is used, but dermal filler is sometimes required.

After Your Anti-Wrinkle Injections

You will be given instructions for post-procedure care and an aftercare handout that must be followed carefully. Don’t lay flat for 4-5 hours following the procedure, do not rub the area vigorously, have a facial, exercise heavily or drink alcohol for 24 hours.

The wrinkle-relaxing effect typically appears after 5-10 days, but it may take longer in some cases. A small percentage of people may need a top-up treatment after 14 days. Some patients do need a higher dose, especially men.

There is typically no recovery time required for this treatment, though some side effects, such as bruising or swelling, may occur. This is a side effect of a needle breaking the skin. All needles can cause bruising.

Note: If you don’t like the treatment, you’re not locked into future treatments, as the effect will wear off.

One advantage of wrinkle relaxers is the aspect of wrinkle prevention. The longer wrinkle relaxers are used, usually, the more wrinkle prevention occurs. Most complications tend to resolve as the product is metabolised within the body, typically after 3-4 months, though individual responses may vary.
