What are Dermal Fillers?

As we age, we begin to notice the changes in our faces and in our skin. The development of wrinkles and lines, the formation of loose skin, and hollowness of areas of the face.  These are all common to the aging process.

Dermal fillers are injectable substances used to fill in and ease away these unwanted signs of aging. Most dermal fillers are pure synthetic substances that replicate what occurs naturally in the body.

Part of the aging process is the decrease in the production of certain proteins. With less of the connective protein that holds water molecules, our skin loses volume and structure, making our face look gaunt around the cheek and lip areas. Wrinkles and sagging skin also form. With the help of dermal fillers, the skin tissues can be rejuvenated and revitalized.

What happens before the procedure?

You should be healthy and have a full medical history taken. Blood thinning medications and anti-inflammatory products should be avoided for 1 week before dermal fillers. Smokers should cut down or quit at least 1 week beforehand.

The area should be clean and dry and free of make-up. It’s handy to bring an ice pack for swelling afterwards. You should request a consent form to be emailed to you before attending, as it is beneficial to read and fully understand this information.

It is also important to have an experienced injector performing your procedure. We have seen many poor results and complications due to inexperience in this area. Government-approved injectable products and fully-trained injectors are essential.

What happens on the day of the procedure?

Numbing cream can be requested for a small extra cost, or can be bought from the pharmacy and applied half an hour beforehand, as per instructions on the packet.

In our clinic, experienced practitioners will administer a nerve block with a local anaesthetic. We find this decreases discomfort to almost none in most patients. After the procedure, you will be numb, requiring little or no anaesthetic.

Most small areas can be treated in 15-30 minutes. Suitable areas include the forehead, the frown, the temples, the cheeks, the periorbital tear trough region, the nasal bridge (injectable rhinoplasty), nasolabial folds, lips, perioral smoker lines, marionette lines, pre-jowl sulcus, jaw angle augmentation, chin augmentation and fine lines of the neck and hands.

What happens after the procedure?

We recommend you ice the area for 30 minutes after the procedure, and 30 minutes before going to bed, plus again in the morning. An extra pillow or sleeping upright will help to reduce swelling.

Results are immediate and will usually last between 3 and months but may last up to 12 months. There is no downtime, but there may be swelling and bruising for up to 1 week

An aftercare sheet is given to all patients and you should closely follow this. Less than 2 per cent of people need a top-up or slight readjustment.
