What Are Dermal Fillers?

Part of the aging process is decreased production of specific proteins. Skin can lose volume and structure with less of the connective protein that holds water molecules. This can cause our face to look gaunt around the cheek and lip areas.

Dermal Fillers are made of a non-animal compound that occurs naturally in the body. The Dermal Filler is used to restore volume to the face and hands. Dermal fillers can also enhance facial contouring or create fuller lips.

Dermal Filler treatments are often paired with Wrinkle Relaxers for enhanced results. Absolute Cosmetic offers a number of packages combining these treatments.

Dermal filler injections are also known by common names such as wrinkle fillers, facial fillers, wrinkle injections, cosmetic injectables, liquid facelifts, injectable wrinkle treatments, and lip fillers.

Collagen-Stimulating Filler

Collagen-stimulating fillers add volume to correct deep lines and restore lost volume while using the body’s natural response to stimulate the formation of your collagen. This procedure offers long-lasting results.

Depending on the product used, the initial results can last up to four years, and you may see long-term benefits even after the product has been broken down due to the creation of new collagen.

Risks & Side Effects of Dermal Fillers

As with any invasive cosmetic procedure, there are risks associated with dermal fillers. Some of the severe risks include filler blindness, allergic reactions, occluded blood vessels and necrosis of the skin. The risks outlined above are why going to an experienced injector for your dermal filler treatment is essential.

Some common side effects of dermal filler include; swelling, bruising and localised discomfort.

Dissolving Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can be a great way to enhance your appearance. However, sometimes you may experience side effects. In such cases, dissolving dermal fillers may be a solution. The need to use this agent is uncommon, especially regarding filler migration. The process involves injecting a solution that breaks down the filler material and allows it to be absorbed by the body.

Depending on the amount and type of filler used, multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. Possible side effects of this procedure include bruising, swelling, redness, and discomfort, which are usually temporary and subside within a few days. Severe allergic reactions to the enzyme solution are rare but can occur.

After dissolving the previous filler, it is important to wait at least two weeks before having dermal fillers again. Consultation with a qualified medical practitioner is recommended to determine if this procedure is appropriate for you. The cost of filler dissolving starts from $220 per treatment.

Before Your Dermal Filler Injections

You should be in good health before your dermal filler injections. At the consultation, we will take a complete medical history. Blood-thinning medications and anti-inflammatory products should be avoided for 1-week before Dermal Fillers. Smokers should cut down or quit at least one week beforehand.

The area should be clean and dry and free of makeup. Reading and signing the consent and aftercare forms is required to ensure you are well-informed before your consultation.

It is also essential to have an experienced injector performing your procedure. We have seen many poor results and complications due to inexperience. Government-approved injectable products and fully-trained injectors are essential.

Dermal Filler Injection Procedure

Sedation/Anesthetic

Numbing cream can be requested for a small additional cost or purchased from the pharmacy and applied half an hour beforehand.

Experienced practitioners will administer a nerve block with a local anaesthetic in our clinic. We find this decreases discomfort to almost none in most patients. After the procedure, you will be numb, requiring little or no anaesthetic.

The Procedure

Most small areas can be treated in 30-45 minutes. Suitable locations include the forehead, the frown, the temples, the cheeks, the periorbital tear trough region, the nasal bridge (injectable rhinoplasty), nasolabial folds, lips, perioral smoker lines, marionette lines, pre-jowl sulcus, jaw angle augmentation, chin augmentation and fine lines of the neck and hands.

After The Dermal Filler Procedure

We recommend you ice the area for 30 minutes after the procedure and 30 minutes before bed, plus again in the morning. An extra pillow or sleeping upright will help to reduce swelling.

Results are immediate and will usually last between 3 months to two years, and this will depend on the filler used and the individual.

There is no downtime, but there may be swelling and bruising for up to 1-week.

An aftercare sheet is given to all patients; you should closely follow this. Less than 2% of people need a filler top-up or readjustment. However, be mindful that immediately after the procedure swelling will be present. This will subside over time, you may believe the filler to be gone, however this is usually just reflective of a need for more volume to equal the swelling size, which can be done after 4 weeks.
