*It’s important to recognize that any cosmetic surgical or invasive procedure comes with inherent risks and the possibility of complications. Therefore, before moving forward, we strongly recommend that you allocate time for thorough research, self-education, and consider seeking a second opinion from a qualified practitioner to make an informed decision.

How to Prepare Before Breast Reduction Surgery

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.

It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.

To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure.

On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure.

Benefits of a Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery aims to alleviate physical discomfort physical discomfort associated with oversized breasts. Beyond these primary outcomes, the procedure offers additional benefits, including:

  1. Improved Posture: Excess breast tissue can strain the shoulders and contribute to neck pain, leading to poor posture. Breast reduction addresses this issue, promoting better alignment.
  2. Increased Mobility: Excessive breast tissue may hinder engagement in physical activities due to discomfort or restricted movement. Breast reduction enhances mobility, making it easier to participate in various activities.
  3. Enhanced Comfort: By reducing breast size, the surgery contributes to greater comfort in daily life, minimizing physical discomfort associated with overly large breasts.
  4. Clothing Versatility: Individuals with large breasts often face challenges finding well-fitting clothes. Breast reduction expands clothing options, allowing for more choices in comfortable and appropriately sized attire.

Candidates for a Breast Reduction

The optimal candidate for a breast reduction is an individual who is in good physical health and possesses realistic expectations regarding the anticipated outcomes of the procedure. Potential candidates may exhibit one or more of the following characteristics, including large and heavy breast tissue, disproportionate breast size, neck pain, challenges in finding well-fitting clothing, and limitations in participating in physical activities. However, it is crucial to undergo a consultation for this surgical intervention to assess individual suitability and determine if breast reduction is the appropriate course of action. Additionally, being a non-smoker is considered essential, as smoking may elevate the risk of complications during the surgery.

What to Expect During Your Breast Reduction Procedure

The Procedure

The breast reduction surgery is typically performed as a day-case procedure under sedation in our licensed day surgery clinic. Patients are usually admitted early in the morning/afternoon and discharged later in the afternoon, allowing for a convenient and efficient recovery process.

Post Procedure

Following breast reduction surgery, patients will proceed to the recovery area and subsequently be discharged to return home under the care of their nominated caregiver for rest. The next day, a follow-up appointment with one of our nurses is scheduled to monitor recovery progress and detail your aftercare protocols.

Absolute Cosmetic prioritizes patient well-being and aims to minimize discomfort throughout the process. Consequently, all surgical procedures, including breast reduction, are conducted under neurolept sedation to ensure a comfortable and patient-focused experience.

Recovery After Breast Reduction Surgery

It’s typical to experience some discomfort in the initial days following breast reduction surgery. Notably, significant improvement is often noticeable within the first week, although swelling may persist for up to 6 weeks. On average, the final result becomes evident around the three-month mark, with some patients observing positive changes as early as one month. However, for certain individuals, achieving the ultimate outcome may extend to a period of up to 12 months, emphasizing the gradual nature of the healing process.

Recovery time can vary among patients, with some individuals able to resume regular activities within 5-7 days after breast reduction surgery. We recommend incorporating light exercise at 1 week, progressing to moderate exercise at 2 weeks, and full resumption of regular activities at 3 weeks. However, it’s advisable to avoid extreme exercise for a period of 6-12 weeks following the procedure to ensure a gradual and safe return to physical activities. Individual recovery guidelines may be adjusted based on the patient’s differing healing process and factors of age, genetics or lifestyle.
