What is a Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves moving healthy hair follicles from a donor area, usually the back or sides of the head, to areas affected by thinning or baldness. The transplanted hair is resistant to DHI (the hormone that causes hair loss and male pattern baldness) meaning the results of the hair transplant procedure are permanent. The goal is to restore hair growth in these areas, resulting in a more youthful and attractive appearance.

There are several methods of hair transplantation, but the most common and effective techniques are Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). New Hair Clinic is the only hair transplant clinic in WA to offer both of these methods.

Which Type Of Hair Transplant Is Right For Me?

New Hair Clinic offers follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). This allows our doctor to work with each patient to determine which hair transplant surgery method is right for them. This contrasts with other clinics that only offer one type of hair transplant surgery method. When there is only one method they perform, that is all they will sell. The team at New Hair Clinic are not sales based, our team and our doctor are motivated by patient safety and outcomes.

Deciding between FUT and FUE methods may lead to many questions, some will only be able to be answered by our doctor in a consultation, others can be answered over the phone by our friendly team who you can call our Perth clinic on (08) 9389 6000.

What Is FUE Hair Transplant Method?

With FUE hair transplantation or follicular unit extraction, each follicular unit or graft is harvested individually from the scalp by the doctor. The individual hair follicles are removed in a random pattern, allowing our doctor to harvest hair from the donor area with less noticeable thinning of the area. Some of the benefits of FUE are faster recovery time, no visible scar so hair can be cut shorter in the donor area and no stitches required in the donor area.

What Is FUT Hair Transplant Method?

With a follicular unit transplant (also sometimes also referred to as the “strip method”) a long, thin piece of tissue is extracted from the back of the scalp. The individual follicular units or grafts are then removed from the strip. Once the follicles have been harvested, the wound is sutured closed leaving behind a single, fine linear scar.

FUT Hair Transplant

FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, is another popular hair transplant method that involves removing a strip of skin with hair follicles from the donor area. The strip is then dissected into individual follicular units under a microscope before being transplanted to the recipient area.

Benefits of FUT Hair Transplant:

  • Allows for the transplantation of a larger number of grafts
  • Typically more cost-effective than FUE
  • Suitable for patients with extensive hair loss
