What is Near Infrared (NIR) Skin Tightening?

Near infrared (NIR) skin tightening helps naturally stimulate the production of collagen from signs of ageing, skin sagging and crepeyness. This is a non surgical, non invasive skin rejuvenation treatment, which will help your skin appear brighter, firmer and more youthful after a course of treatments.

Commonly nicknamed “lunch-time skin tightening”, the NIR experience requires little to no downtime involved and can take 30 to 45 minutes (depending on the scale of the area treated), to complete. Unlike most chemical peels, laser resurfacing, and skin needling procedures, NIR technology does not affect the top layer of the skin, so you are able to head straight back to the office post-treatment.

How does NIR work?

NIR uses infrared light energy to penetrate the tissue under the skin surface, in the deeper layers of the skin. The light energy heats the water in the skin tissue, and causes the collagen fibres to contract and tighten. It also stimulates fibroblasts to repair skin cells, which helps smooth out fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Where can NIR treatment be used?

NIR has both a face and body hand piece, which means the treatment can be used on multiple areas of your body depending on your concerns. Common areas to be treated on the face include chin and jowls, crows feet, forehead, neck and décolletage. Common areas for treatment on the body include upper arms, hands, abdomen and thighs.

What to expect during treatment

Baby oil is first applied to the area/s of treatment that the infrared light will target. The infrared hand-piece will be glided over the skin, while heating the deeper layers of the skin between 39-42 degrees.

What to do post-treatment?

It is strongly recommend to avoid sun exposure after, and between treatments. Ensure to use UVA/UVB sunscreen (SPF >30), and keep the treated area as clean as possible.

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment shouldn’t be painful, though the building of heat may be slightly uncomfortable at times.

Who is a suitable candidate

NIR is suitable for all skin types, meaning most people are suitable candidates for this treatment. The only people who may not get desired results would have extremely poor skin laxity pre treatment.

How many treatments are recommended?

3-6 treatments, with 2-3 week intervals between treatments. Few people need up to 8 treatments.
